Happy Mother's Day: Working Mom Self Care Tips

Ticking one item after the other off their daily to-do lists, mothers often struggle with taking out time for rest and rejuvenation. In the case of working mothers, the challenges could be even more as their days are long and tedious. Sleep deprivation, overload of work, and multi-tasking could cause damage to their physical and mental health. It is important for working moms to be kind to themselves, take short breaks whenever they can, eat a nutritious diet, and make sure to get enough sleep even if it means leaving some tasks to the next day.

The FLIK RD moms put together a list of their best self-care tips as working moms while sharing their favorite way to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Nicole Feneli VP of Wellness & Sustainability

It sounds crazy but as a working mom being super organized is the best way for me to take care of myself. When I am not prepared for busy days or weeks my stress level is really high. There is nothing better than waking up for a busy day and knowing I made lunches the night before, clothes were already picked out and we just have to get in the car and go!

Most of the time we have some kind of kids dance commitment on Mother’s Day which I secretly don’t mind. Having a nice dinner with my family at the end of the day (and not having to do the dishes) is a perfect day for me.

My best self-care tip is to not forget to invest in yourself. As moms, we invest a lot of our time, money, and energy into our kids but, it’s important to save a little bit of our time, money, and energy to invest in ourselves as well!

On Mother’s Day, I enjoy honoring the mother figures in my life as well and enjoying spending time with my sweet girls.

Juggling work schedules, kid's activities, and maintaining “dating” our significant others - all add to the daily grind and each day often blurs into the next. I make it a point to plan at least one adventure that is out of our normal routine - whether it is going for a picnic, taking a day trip, or trying a new restaurant - because despite the to-do list, creating lasting memories together and having fun feeds my soul and makes me the best version of a momma I can be.

Unfortunately, my sanity is mostly seasonal as my favorite form of self-care is tending to my backyard garden. I love everything that comes with gardening – sweating it out, soaking in the vitamin D, caring for the soil, growing different varieties, listening to the birds (download the Merlin Bird ID app!), picking weeds after a good rain and the soil is soft, tending to the fruits, veggies, herbs, and flowers, and then most importantly, enjoying the harvest! My kids eat significantly more vegetables when they have followed them from little baby plants to massive shrubs taller than them!

On Mother’s Day, I want to visit a local garden, Whitehall Gardens, to see the peonies in bloom then get ice cream at my favorite shop, Graeters. If I can fit in a bike ride and a meal cooked by someone else, then I’ll consider that a bonus!

Doing one thing for me every day that lights me up or fills my cup is the best act of love I can give myself as a working mom. I also tell myself that I am worthy of being loved! Things like journaling, meditation/mindset, and making a delicious nutritious latte, snack, or meal at home or out that I know I enjoy, helps me get in a good headspace. This helps me show up for myself which, in turn, helps me better show up as a momma and worker.

Did I mention I’m a huge foodie? I will be eating at my favorite Thai food spot in Chester County on Mother’s Day with my family and son!
