FLIK Family Friday: Revving Up Recipes

You know vegetables are healthy for you and critical to part of a well-rounded diet, but how exactly do you encourage more vegetable consumption in your family? After all, we know it's a lot harder to get your kids to opt for a carrot over a cookie. 

Take a cue from the FLIK Independent School Dining team and rev up your recipes. Our Revved Up recipes aren't about "sneaking" in hidden vegetables; instead, it's about enhancing kid-friendly favorites with additional vegetables and never compromising on flavor or texture.

Here are a few ways to add vegetables in your family's favorite recipes: 

Learn to Love Orange

Pureed butternut squash, carrots, sweet potato, and pumpkin have so many creative uses in revved up recipes. Play around with adding purees into traditional dishes like mac and cheese, chili, a hearty stew, or even this Butternut Squash Queso Dip. Take it to the next level and try butternut squash waffles or sweet potato pancakes for breakfast. 

Embrace Root Vegetables 

Light colored root vegetables like white carrots, parsnips, golden beets, rutabagas, and turnips are excellent additions to sauces, soups and stews. Try pureeing them and adding them to mashed potatoes, Alfredo sauce, even tomato soup or marinara sauce to an extra creamy consistency.  

Add Veggies to Baked Goods 

Making pumpkin muffins for breakfast or a snack? Add shredded carrots or zucchini make a perfect addition to your favorite recipes. Don't be shy -- play around with shredded vegetables, or finely chopped broccoli or spinach into your traditional muffins, breads, and savory cakes for  a fun twist.  

Boost Up the Beef

Hearty vegetables, like mushrooms, carrots and eggplant, are great additions to beef. Add a cup or two of minced or pureed vegetables to your favorite meatball recipe, hamburger mix, meatloaf or taco filling.
