Homemade Apple Butter

Although some of the first written recipes for apple butter date back to the 1800s, historians believe this sweet condiment was first introduced during the middle ages in Germany and Belgium. It is believed the practice of making apple butter was brought to Appalachia by the Pennsylvania Dutch who migrated to Western North Carolina after the American Revolutionary War. Simply put, apple butter was made to preserve apple crops through a long winter. Today, celebrating the apple season for many regions includes an annual apple butter festival; honoring both the crop and the family tradition behind the recipe. This simple recipe makes a great addition to pancakes, toast, pork chops, and spooned atop overnight oats.
