FARMER’S MARKETS BRING FALL TRADITIONS TO THE DINING HALL
There’s something special about a fall day at the farmers market: the crisp air, the colorful harvest, and the chance to gather around good food. This October, FLIK Independent School Dining (FISD) is bringing that experience to our K-12 independent school dining campuses in unexpected and creative ways.
Each month, we’re transforming everyday meals into opportunities to connect as a community, explore new flavors, and celebrate the moments that make the school year memorable and bring school spirit to the table. This October, we’re celebrating the Farmer’s Market.
Farmer’s Market reflects FISD’s commitment to supporting local farmers, celebrating the flavors of the season, and introducing students to produce and products from local suppliers in age-appropriate ways. Students are able to connect with our culinary teams to understand what they eat at school, where it comes from, and who the farmers and producers are that make it possible.

Across our schools, culinary teams brought Farmer’s Market to life in ways that reflected their communities and showcased the possibilities of seasonal dining and autumn harvest.
At one school in Atlanta, the celebration centered on corn, with students joining the chef for a hands-on shucking lesson. Students rolled up their sleeves to remove the husks and silks before seeing the fresh corn transformed into street corn and roasted, carnival-style corn for lunch.

Another school in Connecticut created a full-scale farmers market experience, inviting students, faculty, and staff to shop for fresh ingredients to take home and enjoy with their families. The pop-up market turned the dining space into a lively community gathering place, complete with the sights, sounds, and spirit of a traditional market. Local cheeses, fresh produce, seasonal sides, and familiar favorites allowed everyone to discover something new.

And, of course, no fall farmers market would be complete without a few special treats. Fresh cider donuts and other seasonal offerings added to the excitement — and proved to be a memorable part of the celebration for students and adults alike.
These hands-on moments are at the heart of what FISD brings to our independent school communities. They invite students to participate, ask questions, try something new, and share the experience with their peers. More than a meal, Farmer’s Market brought the spirit of the season — and the spirit of community — to the dining hall.

Choosing seasonal ingredients can also support more sustainable dining practices. When food is sourced closer to where it is served, it can help strengthen local food systems and reduce the distance ingredients travel to reach the dining hall. Just as importantly, seasonal menus encourage a greater appreciation for fresh ingredients and can inspire students to make thoughtful choices about food and sustainability.
From seasonal flavors and local ingredients to interactive experiences and sustainability education, each celebration strengthens school community and creates memories that extend far beyond the lunch period. This October, Farmer’s Market reminded us that the best traditions are meant to be shared — and that every meal can be an opportunity to celebrate our communities, our seasons, and the people who bring food to the table.
