What the FLIK is…the flexitarian diet?
The Flexitarian Diet was created by registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner in 2009. Blatner published a book titled “The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease and Add Years to Your Life” which includes recipes and a five-week meal plan. The idea is to be flexible in your eating by including mostly plants in the diet while allowing the flexibility to add meat. In other words, no need to go completely vegetarian or vegan to reap the benefits of plant-based eating. This year, the US News and World Report ranked the Flexitarian Diet as number two on the list of Best Diets Overall in 2019. It also ranked in the top 10 of a number of lists including the Best Plant-Based Diets and Easiest Diets to Follow.

The Flexitarian Diet emphasizes adding foods to your diet, rather than subtracting them. Whole grains, meat alternatives, beans, dairy, and of course, fruits and vegetables are all emphasized at the core of the flexitarian way of eating. US News and World Report also points out that this diet is easy to follow because of its limited rules and flexibility.
