Student-run Hudson Market on Main, cafe at RCC Culinary Arts Center is open

The cafe at Rockland Community College Hospitality & Culinary Arts Center is finally open. 

Though the college opened its doors to students in January, its Hudson Market on Main cafe, at 5 N. Main St., took longer to be ready. Opening day was Oct. 22 with a grand opening set for Nov. 14. 

Managed by Flik Hospitality, the cafe features an array of hot and cold items, including baked goods, soups, salads and sandwiches along with coffee from local vendor Java Love (which recently opened its own shop in Suffern).

The goal, according to Cris Spezial, RCC department chair of Hospitality and Tourism, is for students to run and manage the cafe. That means some of the food they make during their classes will be a part of the cafe's offerings (and will change accordingly).

According to Mark Davidoff, the interim coordinator for RCC's Culinary Arts Center, the cafe "is a culinary collaboration" with Flik.

In addition to breakfast and lunch items, Hudson Market on Main also features retail items from vendors sourced from the Hudson Valley, a key component of the college's curriculum.

A pop-up restaurant, also run by students, is in the works. "It will be their concept, their menus and theirs ideas," said Spezial. Look for a spring opening as well as the possibility of other pop-ups such as a candy store for Valentine's Day. 

The 45-seat cafe features counter seats by the window (great for people-watching) as well as tables inside. In an homage to the old O&R building, the space is decorated with vintage photos.
